The main problem is that younger drivers don't have experience in driving fast,so they generally get over-confident thinking they can handle it when they might not be able to... I don't think raising the age will do any good it will only make things inconvenient.

I agree with you. It seems that a lot of adults were in most accidents than teens. Also I noticed that teens are way more mature than adults. For instance, my dad was driving on a empty road from one state to another. He was caught and ended up with a speeding ticket. However he switched with my sister who was 16 going on 17. She took us back home without a speeding ticket.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I am currently out of town and will not be able to meet with you on Friday. However, I do appreciate your contact. If you would like to go to the Napier City Council Website www.napier.govt.nz you could contact councillor Harry Lawson who is leading the charge on our tire problem.

Hi Bill,
Yes you do have quite a tyre eyesore in Pandora, Napier. Hopefully with the passing of the Waste Minimisation Bill last week government will now work with industry to put together a product stewardship scheme for tyres that will work. As regards burning tyres it's not as bad as you think. Tyres have been and continue to be burned in the EU which has the toughest environmental standards. Burned in high temperature operations like cement kilns the emissions aren't bad. In fact because the Tyre Derived Fuel (TDF) often replaces coal and has a higher calorific value TDF often results in a decrease in overall emissions, particularly sulphur emissions.
I'm in Napier this Friday and would welcome the opportunity of phoning you or possibly seeing you to discuss how the situation at Pandora might be sorted out.

Bill - as one of the two councillors who voted against the resolution to close Marineland when Kelly dies, I would like to reiterate what I said on your website earlier in the year(and last week's Napier Mail): I am opposed to capturing any more dolphins, but I would like genuine public consultation to occur on the future of a dolphin-free Marineland, whether Kelly dies tomorrow or in 10 years' time.

Let's not wait for Kelly's demise for that: Council needs to hear people's ideas now.

What I said in the debate was that Napier people should have an opportunity to make submissions to us with their ideas on the future of a dolphin-free Marineland, whether it is to be revamped, bulldozed or kept on as a marine zoo.

I voted against the resolution because I felt the mandate it gave us for public consultation on the future of Marineland was too wishy washy.

It's up to Council now to listen to what Napier people say about the future of this iconic attraction.

Let's hope the people of Napier pick up the challenge you make in your last sentence!

None of these polls are very fair as they do not share the opinins of the youth just adults. I believe that the driving age should not be raised they should simply make it harder to get a liscence and raise the drinking age. They should also make courses such as defensive driving courses compulsary and punishment become harsher.

I agree with you Bill. Marineland should be redeveloped - minus the dolphins of course.

Although I am opposed to having dolphins in captivity, I confess that I signed the petition after Shona died. It was a very emotional reaction for me: her demise was more than the death of an animal, it sounded the death-knoll for Marineland, which had provided wonderful family entertainment and education to millions of happy visitors over the years.

Now in the clear light of day, I don't support getting any more dolphins but do agree that we need to rethink a new, redeveloped Marineland.

My suggestion is that Council holds an information giving-gathering public meeting on the future of Marineland - based on the premise that we will NOT be seeking further dolphins - to show the range of options with costings and seek other ideas from the community.

Marineland belongs to ALL of Napier and I for one would appreciate knowing what ideas the public has on what we should do with it - and of course how we can pay for it!
